Burnt Store Road is just less than twenty miles long from top to bottom, but has a very prominent role and profile in the Florida counties of Charlotte and Lee. It is a major artery for those travelling between Punta Gorda and either Pine Island or Cape Coral. This chapter provides a high level overview of the development of the road.
Subsequent to the publication of the book, a major land clearing operation has commenced on the west side of Burnt Store Road across from the Burnt Store Presbyterian Church. The project is on Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park land owned by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. It is part of a major initiative by Southwest Florida Water Management District to restore water flows and filtration and remove invasive vegetation such as Brazilian Peppers from the preserve land.
There have also been several land zoning change applications approved in 2016 for the area south of the State Park in the vicinity of the RV and Boat Storage facility which suggest that residential development in the area may soon commence after a ten year hiatus.
