Several eminent writers and historians have tackled the topic of the origins of the Burnt Store name without conclusive success. Undeterred by those results I have also pursued this mystery. I have been able to conclude that there was a Charlotte Harbor trading house established in the 1840’s and that it was the inspiration for the Burnt Store name. I’ve also been able to identify where it was located. Most of the other details of the prevailing Burnt Store legend, including the details of its burning, are either easy to discount or remain difficult to confirm.
