Research by a Seasonal Resident of Burnt Store Road, Florida
I am by nature and training a curious person. When I drive up and down Burnt Store Road I can’t help but ask myself questions such as: how was this land first settled and developed; why is there so much green space around us; why do I have a Punta Gorda address but pay property taxes to Lee County; what are the origins of the Burnt Store name; and when will the next hurricane hit? Grammatical inappropriateness aside, I attempt in this book to answer the question, Where do we (as Burnt Store Road residents) live, anyway?
By some estimates, close to 50% of Burnt Store Road residents did not live in the area ten years ago. I am one of those. There has therefore been a significant loss of community memory which this book is intended, in part, to address. I believe that such a sense of community is an important building block in any society. My hope is that this book will help build connections between the communities at both ends of Burnt Store Road and those who live along the thoroughfare.
