The Legend of the Burnt Store!
Have any of your Northern visitors ever asked “How did Burnt Store Road ever get a name like that?” Maybe you’ve even asked yourself the same question. Now, thanks to Canadian author and researcher Graham Segger, you can give a definitive answer. Graham is a seasonal resident of Burnt Store Marina who recently released his eBook “Where Do We Live’ which traces the origin of the Kennedy Trading House. You might be surprised to learn just how close this old 1840’s outpost was to our present-day Northwest Cape Coral neighborhood. In fact, it was in our own backyard! But let’s not spoil the rest of the story. Graham weaves a much better narrative interspersed with his original research and derivative work from others. As you read, you might catch the subtle connection between the Kennedy Trading House site, the McKay-Summerlin wharf and our own NWNA Shoreline Initiative. We’re already aware of the natural beauty and wonder of the eastern Charlotte Harbor shoreline; now we know it has archeological and historical significance as well! The book also addresses many other issues of interest to NW Cape residents such as how the local conservation lands were preserved, our hurricane history and the chronology of development along Burnt Store Road among many other topics. Access WhereDoWeLive.com, the author’s webpage that includes local book reviews and presentation schedule. You can also download his book. Where Do We Live was also previewed in the May 1, 2016 edition of the News Press Tropicalia section. Our thanks to Graham for acknowledging NWNA’s website and some of our members as sources for parts of his book.
